Lanyards For Knives: The Third Arm

By Phyllis Chapman

There are lots of knives on the market for those who enjoy camping and hunting and you've probably noticed a hole in the handle. Usually these holes are designed to be fitted with lanyards. Sometimes a knife set you buy will come with the lanyard in place already.

A few things you can do with the lanyard clearly is to prevent it from dropping on the ground during motion. For instance if you are on a boat and are going fishing or something you probably would use the knife lanyard to tie around your wrist so that it will not accidentally fall into the ocean.

The lanyard provides an effective third arm for you which allows you to free up your two hands to do other things such as preparing fish, or cutting open coconuts or what have you. Of course if you do this you should be careful because you do not want to accidentally cut yourself with the lanyard. That would defeat the entire purpose.

That's just one possible utility of lanyards. The bottom line is they provide a way to free up your hands so that you can focus on other important activities. Instead of having someone else carry a tool for you, you can carry it yourself with the lanyard while you are making preparations, etc.
